Interior finishing

Trim & finish carpentry

The last ten per cent of a renovation and the first thing anyone notices. Trim is what separates a room that is finished from one that is merely painted, and it is usually rushed — booked at the end of a bigger job, handed to whoever is free that week, and judged on the day rather than from across the room.

Licensed work

General carpenter is a voluntary trade in Ontario

Finish carpentry needs no licence. General Carpenter (403A) exists as an apprenticeable trade with a Certificate of Qualification through Skilled Trades Ontario, but it is voluntary — nobody is required to hold it, and most good trim carpenters do not. Judge this trade on work you can see rather than on paper: ask to look at a finished room, and look at the corners. Liability insurance and a WSIB clearance certificate are still worth asking for.

Scope

What the work is—and what it isn’t.

Most disputes begin with an exclusion nobody read. Confirm both columns against any quote you receive before comparing prices.

Normally included

  • Baseboard, casing and door trim
  • Crown moulding and cornice
  • Interior door hanging, including pre-hung and slab
  • Wainscoting, board-and-batten and slat or feature walls
  • Stair trim, skirting, nosing and railings
  • Window stools, aprons and returns
  • Built-in shelving and closet fit-out
  • Fireplace surrounds and mantels

Normally excluded

  • Structural framing and anything carrying load
  • Shop-built cabinetry — that is millwork, often a different shop
  • Drywall repair beyond filling small gaps at the trim line
  • Painting and staining, unless explicitly quoted
  • Flooring, which is a separate trade and a separate quote

What moves the price

Why two quotes for the same job differ.

These are the decisions and conditions that actually drive cost on this trade. Understand them and a wide spread between quotes usually explains itself.

  1. 01

Linear footage, and the number of corners and returns in it. A room with six corners costs far more per foot than a corridor with two.

  2. 02

Profile height and build-up. A single-piece baseboard and a three-piece built-up profile are different jobs at the same linear footage.

  3. 03

Paint-grade or stain-grade. Stain-grade hardwood has to be selected for grain and colour, cannot be filled the same way, and leaves no room to hide a bad cut.

  4. 04

Material. Primed MDF, finger-joint pine and solid hardwood differ in price, in how they cut, and in how they behave in a damp basement.

  5. 05

Whether existing trim is removed and disposed of, and what the wall looks like underneath once it is off.

  6. 06

How far out of square and out of plumb the house is. In an older Halton home this is the single most underestimated item, because every piece has to be scribed to fit rather than cut to a number.

Cost ranges

What it costs in Halton.

Cost ranges for this trade have not been published yet.

Rather than repeat a national average that means nothing in Halton, this table stays empty until the figures are ones I have priced myself. The cost drivers above are the part that matters most anyway—they explain why the numbers vary.

If you want a real number for your property, that is what the walkthrough is for.

Before you sign

What the quote must contain.

If any of these is missing, ask for it in writing before you compare prices. A quote that cannot answer these questions is not a quote—it is an estimate wearing a suit.

Walk away

Red flags on this trade.

None of these are matters of taste. Each one has a specific consequence, and each is visible before you commit any money.

Before the final payment

Agree a written deficiency list before releasing the last payment. It is the only leverage that survives the end of a job.

The bench

Who I’d send you to.

No names here, deliberately — a published list is an endorsement I cannot stand behind on any given day, and the contractors on it were told they would not appear on one. Tell me the project and I’ll introduce you to whichever of these fits it.

If you are selling

What this does to a sale.

Trim is disproportionately powerful before a sale because buyers read it as care. A wavy baseboard or a door that will not latch says the work was rushed, and a buyer who believes that about the trim will assume it about the things they cannot see.

Ready to hire

I’ll give you one or two names, not a directory.

Everyone on the bench is someone whose finished work I have walked. Where I also hold their WSIB, insurance and licence documentation, the profile says so — and where it does not say so, I do not hold it. No referral fee is accepted from any of them.
